Gwangju Biennale 2004
Invitational Art to Wear Exhibition

Gwangju, Korea

The artwork, Slight Protection from the Inevitability of Extinction, is a response to the Biennale’s title and theme: “Dust and Water are vital natural phenomena, which can be understood as ecological orders describing the cycle of creation and extinction”. While one function of apparel is to protect from the elements, these conceptual garments offer little protection from outside forces. Meanwhile, acts of creation are energized by artists’ desires to leave uniquely human marks on the world. Thus, making works of art is our effort to protect against extinction. The materials used in this artwork are essentially dust and water. The co-existence of solid forms, deteriorating shapes, and muted shadows suggests the enduring interplay of presence and absence.
